Use HPFS386 file system

What:

You should use HPFS386 file system on large, busy disks by installing OS/2 Warp Server Advanced. HPFS386 is a 32-bit file system that is optimized for a server environment with large disk systems, and is included with OS/2 Warp Server Advanced.

HPFS386 is an enhanced version of the regular HPFS included with OS/2 Warp. One
manner in which HPFS386 may be tuned is through adjusting the size of the disk cache.

Performance Impact:

The use of a large cache likely should impact your system performance, not only in program execution but also in printing. OS/2 Warp Server Advanced Version, "File and Print Sharing" option, requires about 20 MB of hard disk space.

How:

You must purchase a license for OS/2 Warp Server Advanced Version and install it over OS/2 Warp Version 4. In order to benefit from the HPFS386 file system, your applications and data files must reside on a HPFS partition.

If they currently reside on a FAT partition, you must backup the partition, reformat it for HPFS and restore the files. The HPFS386 file system is compatible with the OS/2 Warp Version 4 HPFS file system, although it does make minor changes during HPFS386 installation.

Tune the file system cache

What:

The disk cache keeps frequently accessed data in RAM rather than having to repeatedly read it from the disk. However, since the HPFS386 cache is non-pageable, it will reduce the amount of memory available for other applications running on your server, including Domino Go.

This may result in increased swapping on a memory-constrained machine. Therefore, it is important to tune the disk cache properly.

Performance Impact:

May provide some improvement in caching the data required by multiple applications. Possibly significant overall system performance degradation if memory is limited. If heavy swapping does occur, you should decrease the amount of HPFS386 cache allocated through the cachesize parameter in the HPFS386.INI file.

How:

For HPFS, change the option IFS=HPFS.IFS /CACHE: in the CONFIG.SYS file. The maximum cache size for an HPFS file system is 2048 KB.

For HPFS386, you can increase the disk cache size by editing the C:\IBM386FS\HPFS386.INI file and changing the cachesize parameter. The CACHE386 command can be used to display statistics about the HPFS386 cache and to change parameters dynamically for the lazy writer.
