Subj : Tuning of HPFS386 Part I

This is part of the installation of the server:

The installation program sets the useallmem parameter to yes to maximize performance for the 386 HPFS component of File and Print Sharing Services.

OS/2 Warp Server Installation checks for known network adapter cards that cause problems with the useallmem set to yes and resets it to
no if problems are detected.

Problems might occur with network adapter cards that have busmaster capability but do not support full 32-bit DMA. The behavior of a network adapter card that does not support 32- bit direct memory access (DMA) is described below.

Frequently, a session can be established with the server if such network adapter cards exist and are not detected or if a 32-bit DMA card is installed in a 16-bit slot.

However, unpredictable errors might occur because the network adapter cannot access memory above 16MB, but the server sometimes places network data in memory above 16MB.

Should this occur, communication between the server and the workstation is impossible.

After installation, you might receive the error message SYS0058 if the server cannot perform a network operation.

If you type Net Error at the
workstation, NET3195 is displayed and says that you have a NetBIOS Control Block (NCB) error.

This occurs when you issue either the DIR or COPY command, your network adapter does not support 32-bit DMA, and useallmem is set to yes. If you type Net Error at the server, it shows no errors. To
correct this situation, edit the /IBMLAN/IBMLAN.INI and /IBM386HPFS/ HPFS386.INI files and set useallmem to no.

Then run the OS/2 Warp Server Tuning Assistant to calculate a new value for cachesize= in the /IBM386FS/HPFS386.INI file.

Performance might be reduced if the
Advanced File and Print Sharing Services must support many active users , but its performance will be acceptable in some situations.
